Certificates, Diplomas and Associate Degrees

544 of the verified programs award at least one certificate, 311 offer an associate degree and 188 a diploma. Short certificates often cover one process in a semester; full certificates and diplomas run about a year; associate degrees usually take four semesters and add general education. Many colleges stack them, so a first-semester certificate counts toward the degree.

How Long Welding School Takes, by Credential

Program length depends on how the school counts time. Technical centers and private welding schools count clock hours; community colleges count credits and semesters. Here's how real programs state it:

As a rough guide from these pages, a single-process certificate takes one semester, a full combination certificate or diploma takes 7 to 12 months full time, and an associate degree takes 18 months to about two and a half years. Evening versions run longer: Palm Beach State College stretches the same 1,050 hours from 40 weeks by day to 56 weeks by evening.

Stackable Certificates: How the Credential Ladder Works

Most community colleges build short certificates that count toward the next award, so you can stop after any step with a credential in hand. Napa Valley College runs a ladder of four certificates, from a 9-unit Welder's Assistant up to a 37-unit certificate, then a two-year AS. Heartland Community College starts with 6-credit stick, MIG and TIG microcertificates that stack into its 16-credit Welding Skills Certificate. Wiregrass Georgia Technical College offers one-term stick certificates alongside its five-term diploma.

Technical colleges often do the same with clock hours. The Tennessee College of Applied Technology in Nashville lists an 84-hour Welder's Helper certificate, 432-hour certificates in MIG, stick and TIG, and the 1,296-hour Combination Welder diploma.

Programs Built to AWS SENSE Standards

47 verified programs say their curriculum follows AWS SENSE, which Harper College describes as the American Welding Society's Schools Excelling through National Skill Standards Education training standards for certification as an AWS Level 1 Entry Welder. Mid Michigan College says trainees who complete a SENSE-compliant program are eligible for an AWS SENSE certificate of completion and wallet card, and East Central College proctors the SENSE 1 certificate in its capstone course.

SENSE is a training standard, not the same thing as the AWS Certified Welder test. Many programs prepare you for both.

What a Week of Welding School Looks Like

Expect far more shop time than lecture. Mt San Antonio College says most welding classes have 1 hour of lecture, then 3 or 6 hours of lab. College of Eastern Idaho runs about two hours a day in the classroom and four and a half hours of hands-on training. Davis Technical College schedules 15 hours a week for 12 months, with morning, afternoon and evening blocks, and Los Angeles Trade Technical College describes its full-time program as about 21 hours a week.

Courses Beyond the Booth in a Welding Degree

Associate degrees add courses that short certificates skip. Eastern Maine Community College requires dedicated welding metallurgy and quality assurance and quality control courses. Pima Community College pairs welding with blueprint reading and estimating, CAD, and layout and fabrication, including project estimating that covers labor, materials and insurance. Flathead Valley Community College adds CAD and SolidWorks and an AWS D1.1 code book course. Even short programs add job skills: CET-Colton teaches shop English, shop math and job preparation alongside the four arc processes.

Across all 667 programs, 102 list metallurgy and 182 list inspection or weld testing, so ask for the course list if either matters to your plans.

Math, Prints and Theory

BLS says courses in blueprint reading, shop mathematics and mechanical drawing may be helpful, and an understanding of electricity also is useful. Expect classroom time on weld symbols, measurement, welding codes and safety alongside booth time.

Schedules
