Where to Learn Robotic Welding in Illinois

Plenty of Illinois welding programs teach you to run a bead by hand. Fewer put you in front of a welding robot. Eight community colleges in the state list robotic or automated welding as part of what they teach, and two of them, Triton College and Sauk Valley Community College, offer a certificate named for it.

This guide covers those eight schools, what each one lists, what the robotic welding technician job pays in Illinois, and how to pick a program based on where you live.

The Eight Illinois Colleges That Teach Robotic Welding

Every school below lists robotic and automated welding among the skills it teaches. The award column shows the certificate or degree that carries the robotics work, or the school’s longest welding award where robotics is folded into the whole program.

Blank cells mean the school lists the award without a credit-hour length.

“Welding awards” counts the welding certificates and degrees each college conferred in 2024–25, not the number of graduates. College of Lake County and Southwestern Illinois College are the two biggest programs on the list. John Wood is the smallest.

Two Certificates Built Around the Robot

If robotics is the main reason you want to train, start with the two schools that give it its own credential.

Triton College: A Full Robotics Welding Certificate Near Chicago

Triton College in River Grove, just west of Chicago, runs three welding certificates inside its engineering technology department. The Robotics Welding certificate is the longest at 22 credit hours. The Welding Fabrication certificate is 16 credit hours, and the Illinois Aligned Basic Welding certificate is 11.

Triton’s welding lineup centers on MIG and TIG, fabrication and blueprint reading, and robotic welding. It is the only school of the eight that does not list stick welding. That makes it a strong fit if you want factory and production work, where MIG and robots do most of the welding, and a weaker fit if you want to weld pipe or structural steel in the field. Tuition and fees were $5,070 for a full-time in-district year in 2024–25.

Best for: a Chicago-area career changer who wants robotics as the headline skill, not an add-on.

Sauk Valley Community College: A Short Robotics Add-on

Sauk Valley Community College in Dixon, in northwest Illinois, offers three welding certificates, and one is the Welder: Robotic Welding certificate at 5 credit hours. The others are Welder: Entry Level at 4 credit hours and Welder: Advanced at 16.

That structure lets you build hand skills first, then add the robotics certificate on top. Sauk Valley conferred 145 welding awards in 2024–25, more than Triton or Rock Valley. The college lists the Welder: Advanced certificate at $2,928 total for in-district students at its 2026–27 rates.

Best for: someone in the Sterling, Dixon or Rock River Valley area who wants a quick, low-cost way to add robot programming to a welding certificate.

Robotics Folded Into a Full Welding Degree

Four colleges teach robotic and automated welding as one part of a broader associate degree or certificate ladder. You come out able to weld by hand in several processes and with time on automated equipment.

College of Lake County in Gurnee

College of Lake County conferred 207 welding awards in 2024–25, more than any other school on this list. It offers the 61-credit Welding and Fabrication Technology AAS and six certificates, from a 9-credit General Welding certificate up to the 45-credit Advanced Welding Fabrication certificate. Students can earn the AWS Welder Performance Qualifier endorsement. The General Welding certificate takes one semester, and full-time students can finish the AAS in two years.

Elgin Community College

Elgin Community College lists the widest skill set of the eight: stick, MIG, TIG, flux-cored, pipe welding, cutting, fabrication, robotic welding, and inspection and testing. It offers a 62-credit AAS and five certificates, including a 20.5-credit Pipe Welding certificate. Classes run morning, afternoon and evening, and certificates take 4 to 16 months. Elgin also had the lowest in-district tuition in Illinois for 2024–25, at $3,252.

Kaskaskia College in Centralia

Kaskaskia College teaches the same full range as Elgin, including pipe welding and inspection and testing, and its training prepares you for AWS Sense Level I certification. The AAS runs four semesters, and the school breaks its certificates into levels: Introductory Welder Level I, Intermediate Level II, Advanced Level III, plus a Fitter Fabricator certificate. The first AAS semester is 19 credit hours, which Kaskaskia prices at $2,660 in tuition.

Southwestern Illinois College in Belleville

Southwestern Illinois College offers a 65-credit AAS in Welding Technology, an 18-credit Basic Welding certificate, a 16-credit Advanced Welding Skills certificate and the Advanced Welding Manufacturing certificate. Day students attend four or five days a week, night students two or three nights, and the lab is open five to six days a week. It conferred 155 welding awards in 2024–25. Rockford and Quincy: Robotics Plus an AWS Test Path

Two more schools pair robotic welding with a clear route to a welding test.

Rock Valley College in Rockford is an American Welding Society accredited test facility. Once you finish its 31-credit Advanced Welding Certificate, you can take a certification test on campus. It also offers a 16-credit Industrial Welding Certificate. The Rockford page lists the other training options in town.

John Wood Community College in Quincy embeds AWS welder certification in its program, and its courses align with AWS SENSE modules and the AWS D1.1 structural code. Professional welders teach day and evening courses, and its stackable certificates can be finished in six months. It is the western Illinois choice on this list.

What a Robotic Welding Technician Earns in Illinois

The Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks robotic welding work under welding, soldering and brazing machine setters, operators and tenders. Here is how that job compares with hand welding and the other jobs a robotics background can lead to, all for Illinois in May 2025.

Two things stand out. First, robotic welding technicians earned a higher median than hand welders, $58,840 against $51,320, and the top tenth earned $92,680 or more. Even the bottom tenth started at $43,830.

Second, the job is small in Illinois. Only 180 people held it in May 2025, compared with 16,260 welders. So don’t count on finding many listings with that exact title. It makes sense to choose a program that teaches hand welding and robotics together, so you can apply for either kind of opening.

The millwright line is worth a look too. Millwrights install and maintain industrial machinery, and Illinois millwrights earned a median $66,640.

Why You Still Learn Hand Welding First

Every one of the eight schools teaches MIG and TIG by hand, and seven of the eight teach stick as well. None of them offers robotics on its own without the hand skills around it. There is a practical reason: to set up a robot, you have to know what a good weld looks like, which settings produce it, and how to fix a joint the robot got wrong.

So plan on a path that looks like this:

1. Start with a short entry certificate in MIG, such as Sauk Valley’s 4-credit Welder: Entry Level or Triton’s 11-credit Illinois Aligned Basic Welding.
2. Add the robotics coursework, either as its own certificate at Triton or Sauk Valley or inside a longer program.
3. Take a welding test if your school offers one. Rock Valley, John Wood, College of Lake County and Kaskaskia all tie their training to AWS testing. The welding certification guide explains how those tests work.
