Notice that tuition and supplies don’t move together. Rend Lake and Lake Land sit in the middle on tuition but list the smallest supply budgets in the state, at $400 and $530. Southwestern Illinois College is one of the cheaper schools on tuition, yet its $2,400 supply estimate is among the highest. Look at both columns before you decide which school is cheaper for you.
What a Whole Welding Program Costs, Not Just One Year
A year of tuition only tells part of the story, because welding credentials in Illinois run from a few weeks to two years. Several colleges publish a price for the full program, which is closer to what you will actually spend.
- McHenry County College, Crystal Lake: the Welding and Fabrication AAS (60 credit hours, about 80 weeks) totals $12,086 in-district, including added costs. The Basic Welding Technician certificate is $4,714 in-district and takes 32 weeks.
- Illinois Central College, East Peoria: the college estimates $10,020 plus supplies and fees for its two-year AAS at 2026–27 rates. The one-year Welding Specialist certificate runs $4,843 and the one-semester Welding Operator certificate $2,171.
- Lincoln Land Community College, Springfield: the Advanced-Level Welding Certificate of Achievement, which starts in August 2026 and runs two semesters, is about $7,267 in tuition and fees plus $1,387.48 for tools and books, at in-district 2026–27 rates.
- Carl Sandburg College, Galesburg: the basic welding certificate comes to about $3,535 total, built on $175 per credit hour plus program fees, course fees, books and registration.
- Kaskaskia College, Centralia: the first semester of the AAS (19 credit hours) is $2,660 in tuition, before student services and lab fees.
If you want a job fast and cheap, the one-semester certificates are where the money goes furthest. If you want an associate degree, plan for a total in the range of the $10,020 Illinois Central estimate or the $12,086 McHenry County figure.
Why Your Home District Changes the Price
Illinois community colleges set three prices: in-district, out-of-district and out-of-state. The gap can be enormous. Kankakee Community College charged $5,220 in-district in 2024–25 and $25,830 at its out-of-state rate. Illinois Valley Community College in Oglesby went from $4,200 to $16,385. Richland Community College in Decatur went from $4,680 to $17,070.
Other colleges keep the gap small. Southwestern Illinois College’s out-of-state rate was $6,720 and Southeastern Illinois College’s was $6,780, both close to what some colleges charge their own residents.
Sauk Valley Community College in Dixon shows all three tiers side by side. Its 16-credit Welder: Advanced certificate costs $2,928 in-district, $6,448 out-of-district and $7,088 out-of-state at 2026–27 rates. Heartland Community College charges $169 per credit hour in-district and $337 out-of-district.
So before you compare schools, find out which district you live in. A college with a higher sticker price inside your district can easily beat a cheaper one across the line.
The Cheapest Ways to Start Welding in Illinois
You don’t have to commit to a full year to get started. A few options keep the first bill small.
Buy one class at a time. Black Hawk College in Moline runs non-credit Production MIG and Stick welding classes at $2,250 per class, with the book included. Each is about 140 clock hours, and the Stick class finishes within six weeks.
Stack microcertificates. Heartland Community College in Normal offers 6-credit Stick, MIG and TIG basics microcertificates. At $169 per credit hour in-district, you pay for one process, get working, then come back for the next.
Pick a short credit certificate. Sauk Valley’s Welder: Entry Level certificate is 4 credit hours. Shawnee Community College in Ullin splits welding into 12 small certificates, several of them 4 to 8 credit hours, taught in a competency-based format where you move ahead as you pass skills. Lincoln Land’s Basic Multipractice certificate takes 8 to 16 weeks.

Where the Private Welding Schools Fit
Five private for-profit schools in Illinois train welders, and they sell speed rather than low price. Stautzenberger College-Rockford Career College charged $16,699 for its 10-month Welding Diploma in 2024–25, about three times the typical community college year. Books were only $630, and the college reported a 66% graduation rate (institution-wide, Fall 2021 cohort).
The others are built around fixed-length, full-time schedules:
- Midwest Technical Institute in Springfield runs a 720-clock-hour Welding Program over about seven months and a 960-hour Welding and Pipefitting Program over about ten, with day and evening classes. It conferred 289 welding awards in 2024–25, the most in Illinois.
- ETI School of Skilled Trades in Willowbrook offers a 906-clock-hour Skilled Welder Program that can take as little as seven months.
- Lincoln College of Technology in Melrose Park teaches a 960-hour welding and fabrication program that includes pipe.
- Universal Technical Institute in Lisle runs a 9 to 10 month Welding Technology program.

Welding School Costs Around Illinois
Chicago and the suburbs. The collar counties have the state’s lowest tuition. In-district tuition was $3,252 at Elgin, $3,504 at Waubonsee, $3,822 at Moraine Valley and $3,894 at Harper.
