How Much Does Welding School Cost in California?

If you live in California and can enroll at a community college, welding school tuition is one of the smallest costs you will face. A full-time year of tuition and fees ran from $1,128 at Yuba College to $1,556 at Long Beach City College in 2024–25 for in-state students. That is a narrow band across dozens of schools, so the price of a class is rarely the reason to pick one college over another.

What does move your total: books and supplies, whether you pay in-state rates, and whether you choose a private or adult-school program that charges one flat price for the whole course. Community College Tuition, School by School

These are tuition and fees for a full-time year, 2024–25, in-state, from NCES College Navigator. Books and supplies are the college’s own yearly estimate. Awards are welding awards conferred in 2024–25.

The spread from top to bottom is a few hundred dollars. If two colleges are both within driving distance, choose on schedule, the certificates offered and how many students finish, not on tuition.

Books, Supplies and Gear Can Cost More Than Tuition

At most California colleges, the books and supplies estimate is close to the tuition bill, and at some it is higher. Fullerton College lists $2,267, Palo Verde College in Blythe lists $2,178 and El Camino College lists $2,136. At the low end, Merced College and Pasadena City College each list $938.

Welding eats consumables. Expect to buy a helmet, gloves, a jacket, boots and hand tools, and some programs also charge lab fees for rod, wire and gas. The college’s supply figure is the best single number to budget from, but treat it as a floor if you plan to buy your own gear to keep.

If you want to keep supply costs down:

• Ask which items the program’s tool list requires in the first term, and buy the rest later.
• Look at a college like Merced College, where the supply estimate is at the bottom of the range and the program awarded 175 welding credentials in 2024–25.
• Build a budget from both numbers together. At Fresno City College, for example, you would plan for $1,334 in tuition and $1,980 in books and supplies for the year.

Colleges That Publish a Whole-Program Price

A yearly tuition figure does not tell you what the whole certificate or degree will cost. A few colleges publish their own estimate for the full program, and these are the most useful numbers in this guide if you are comparing total spending.

• Los Medanos College in Pittsburg estimates $2,900 - $3,300 in average total expenses for its Certificate of Achievement in Welding Technology, covering tuition, textbooks and safety gear. Classes run days, evenings and weekends, which suits you if you are working.
• Butte College in Oroville estimates $5,200-$6,200 for the entire program, including tools, books, tuition and welding qualification paperwork. The program starts each fall, runs as a two-semester sequence and takes 50 students, so apply early.
• Rio Hondo College in Whittier estimates $4,398 for its welding AS degree and $1,756 for its LADBS Structural Steel Certification Program. Its lab is a City of Los Angeles authorized testing site, which matters if you want to work on structural steel in Los Angeles.
• Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut prices its tuition at $46/unit in-state and $334/unit out-of-state, before books and materials. It is also a licensed testing facility for the Los Angeles City Department of Building and Safety.

Private and Adult-School Programs Charge by the Program

Trade schools and adult schools usually quote one total rather than a yearly rate. The trade-off is time: these programs tend to run full days, move faster and admit students more often than a community college.

Hacienda La Puente is the standout value in this group. Its itemized $4,018 total is one of the few California prices that shows every line, and it runs both a weekday day schedule (Monday to Thursday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm) and an evening schedule on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It suits you if you live in the San Gabriel Valley and want an adult-school price with a clear bill.

The two CET campuses charge $15,500, but you get open-entry admission and a 30-hour week that usually wraps up in 8 to 9 months. That suits you if you can train full time and want to start without waiting for a semester. The Institute of Technology in Clovis is the priciest program here at $18,966.50, and it leads to a diploma rather than a college certificate.

Other large private programs, such as Summit College in San Bernardino (244 welding awards in 2024–25) and Advanced Career Institute in Visalia (274 awards), run 36 to 38 week programs. Ask each school for its total price in writing before you sign, and compare it with the community college numbers above.

What Out-of-State Students Pay

The low figures above apply to California residents. If you are moving to California, or have not lived here long enough to count as a resident, the yearly bill jumps. In 2024–25, out-of-state tuition and fees were $7,630 at El Camino College, $8,208 at Yuba College, $10,572 at Los Angeles Trade Technical College, $12,004 at Cerritos College and $14,382 at San Bernardino Valley College.

At that level, a flat-priced adult-school program can cost less than a year at a community college. If you are near the border of residency, it can pay to wait and establish it before you enroll.

Cheapest Paths by Region

Los Angeles and Orange County. You have the widest choice in the state. Compton College ($1,142) and El Camino College ($1,144) sit near the bottom of the tuition range. Cerritos College costs a bit more at $1,364 but conferred 278 welding awards in 2024–25, the most in California, and runs day, evening and weekend classes. Bay Area. Chabot College in Hayward ($1,150) and Las Positas College in Livermore ($1,168) are the lowest-cost options, and both prepare you for American Welding Society tests.

What the Training Pays Back
