How Much Does Welding School Cost in Arizona?

Welding school in Arizona costs $2,208 to $2,948 for a full-time year of tuition and fees at the state’s community colleges if you are an Arizona resident (2024–25). The cheapest was Mohave Community College; the most expensive was Yavapai College.

Because yearly tuition is so similar, the number that really decides your bill is how long you stay. A one-semester basic certificate and a two-year associate degree at the same college can differ by thousands of dollars. So this guide sorts Arizona options by the shape of the program, not just the sticker price.

Community College Tuition, Side by Side

These are tuition and fees for a full-time year, 2024–25, from NCES College Navigator. Northland Pioneer’s rate is in-district; the rest are in-state. Welding awards are the number conferred in 2024–25.

Mesa Community College stands out on volume: 306 welding awards in 2024–25, the most of any community college here. Mohave and Northland Pioneer follow, both with more than 200.

Option 1: Short Credit Certificates

The cheapest way into welding in Arizona is a short, stackable certificate at a community college. You pay per credit, so a smaller certificate costs less than a full year.

Mesa Community College has the widest menu. Its SMAW Plate certificate is 10 credit hours, and the SMAW Pipe certificate is 15. Others focus on MIG and flux-core or on TIG for ferrous or non-ferrous metals, each 18 credit hours. You can start with one and add another later.

Mohave Community College keeps its four certificates small: Introduction to Welding at 16 credit hours, then 20-hour certificates in pipe, production or structural steel welding. You can also test for AWS certification at the college.

Yavapai College in Prescott runs a 16-credit-hour structural certificate over two semesters, and 24-credit-hour certificates in MIG, TIG and pipe. The MIG certificate takes two semesters; TIG and pipe take three.

Pima Community College in Tucson has a Basic Welding certificate you can finish in one full-time semester.

This route suits you if you want to test the trade before committing, or if you already work and need to fit in a few classes at a time.

Option 2: One Price for the Whole Program

Some Arizona schools post a single total instead. These are easier to budget for, but check what each one includes.

• Northland Pioneer College lists the Welder/Welding Technologist certificate at $3,560 for the whole certificate.
• GateWay Community College in Phoenix estimates $5,200 for its entire day program, covering tuition, lab and estimated book fees, plus a $15 registration fee each academic year. The Fundamentals certificate is 720 clock hours, about 9 months at 24 hours a week, taught in cohort blocks.
• Pima Community College estimates its Welding and Fabrication AAS at $11,262 for the full two-year program (2026–27, in-state, full-time). That includes an optional $540 fee for the AWS D1.1 test.
• Western Maricopa Education Center (West-MEC) in Glendale charges $16,950 for its 900-clock-hour program, plus a $50 application fee. Test fees are extra.

West-MEC costs the most, but its schedule is part-time. You can take it at 16 hours a week for 60 weeks or 12 hours a week for 80 weeks, with afternoon, evening or morning sessions depending on campus. If you cannot stop working, that flexibility may be worth the higher price.

Option 3: Associate Degrees

If you want the degree, five Arizona community colleges offer a welding AAS: Central Arizona College, Eastern Arizona College, Mesa, Northland Pioneer and Pima. At roughly the same yearly tuition, a degree costs more in total simply because it takes longer: four full-time semesters at Eastern Arizona College and two years at Pima.

Central Arizona College is the one to look at if pipe is your goal. It offers separate AAS degrees in structural welding and in pipefitting and pipe welding, and students can qualify for NCCER Pipefitting certification alongside AWS, API and ASME welder qualifications. It also had the lowest out-of-state tuition in the state at $4,500.

Northland Pioneer College runs a 64-credit-hour AAS and three step-by-step Level I to III certificates, and builds toward NCCER and AWS credentials. For students in its district, tuition was $2,232 a year.

Short Programs in the Phoenix Area

East Valley Institute of Technology in Mesa runs a 360-clock-hour welding program, the shortest on this list. Its main campus is an accredited AWS testing facility, so you can test where you train. It conferred 92 welding awards in 2024–25.

GateWay Community College offers five certificates beyond Fundamentals, including TIG on ferrous and non-ferrous metals, SMAW pipe, structural welding and precision welding. Because the $5,200 estimate covers lab and book fees, it is one of the easiest totals in the state to plan around.

Mesa Community College, in the same metro, charged $2,358 for a resident year and awarded more welding credentials than any other Arizona community college.

Outside the Valley, Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher offers a Welding Technology Certificate over two full-time semesters and a Welding Manufacturing Fundamentals certificate over four part-time semesters, which suits you if you need to keep a job while you train.

The Faster Private Diplomas

Three private schools in the Phoenix area run full-time welding programs designed to finish in under a year:

• Refrigeration School Inc in Phoenix: 7 months, with morning, afternoon, evening, weekend and overnight sessions and online theory. It conferred 359 welding awards in 2024–25, the most in Arizona.
• Universal Technical Institute in Avondale: 9 to 10 months, with frequent start dates.
• Miller-Motte College-Arizona Automotive Institute in Glendale: a 56.5-credit-hour Combination Welding diploma over 10 months, with rolling enrollment.

These suit you if speed and schedule matter more than the lowest price. Refrigeration School offers the widest range of class times, and UTI and Miller-Motte both enroll new students often, so you can usually start soon after you decide.

Books, Gear and Out-of-State Rates

Books and supplies added $720 a year at Mohave and as much as $1,920 at Pima in 2024–25. Central Arizona College listed $1,600, and Northland Pioneer $1,400. Pima’s figure is the highest yearly books estimate in the state, so budget for it if Tucson is your choice.

If you are moving to Arizona, residency is the biggest factor. Northland Pioneer charged out-of-state students $10,320 against $2,232 in-district. Eastern Arizona College charged $9,552 and Yavapai $9,486. Central Arizona College is the outlier at $4,500.

What It Pays Back in Arizona

Arizona welders earned a median of $55,600 a year, or $26.73 an hour, in May 2025, above the national median of $53,750. In the Phoenix-Mesa-Chandler area, where most of the state’s welding jobs are, the median was $56,540.
