How Much Does Welding School Cost in Pennsylvania?

A full-time year of welding school in Pennsylvania cost anywhere from $4,842 to $21,225 in tuition and fees in 2024–25. The low end is a community college in your home county. The high end is a private technical college.

That’s a wider spread than most states, and it comes down to two things: the kind of school you choose, and whether you live in the college’s home district.

Pennsylvania Welding Tuition, Lowest to Highest

These are 2024–25 tuition and fees for a full-time year. The scope column matters: “in-district” is the rate for residents of the community college’s home area, and “all students” means the school charges everyone the same.

The Three Price Tiers

Community Colleges: Lowest Price, Slower Pace

Six community colleges charged between $4,842 and $6,975 for in-district students. If you live in the college’s home area, this is your cheapest path to a full welding certificate or degree.

The trade-off is time and completion. These colleges reported graduation rates between 21% and 31% for their Fall 2021 starting class, lower than the private schools.

If you live outside a college’s home district, you’ll pay a higher rate than the in-district figure above, so check which college serves your county before you compare.

Public Technical Colleges: The Middle Ground

Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster charged $9,050 a year, the same for all students, and reported a 71% graduation rate. Its per-semester tuition is $4,725, and its welding certificate takes 9 months. Housing and a meal plan cost extra if you live on campus.

Commonwealth Technical Institute in Johnstown charged $7,714 for its 12-month, 1,350-hour welding diploma and reported an 86% graduation rate. Your first AWS certification attempt is covered by tuition.

Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport is the priciest public option at $18,240 in-state, but it’s also the only school on this list with a bachelor’s degree path in welding and fabrication engineering technology.

Private Career Schools: Fastest, Most Expensive

Private schools charged $13,431 to $21,225. In return, you usually finish in a year or less on a fixed schedule. Rosedale Technical College in Pittsburgh runs an 8-month welding technician program on a four-day week and reported an 81% graduation rate. Penn Commercial in Washington runs a 12-month diploma and reported 84%.

Programs Priced as One Total

Some Pennsylvania schools publish a price for the whole program instead of a yearly rate. These are useful if you want to know the full bill up front.

• Philadelphia Technician Training, Philadelphia: $18,200 for the entire 26-week program, which includes a $150 registration fee and a $12 insurance fee. Books and supplies are listed at $0. You can take morning classes (8 a.m. to 3 p.m.) or evening classes (3 to 10 p.m.). It conferred 119 welding awards in 2024–25, the most in Pennsylvania.
• Schuylkill Technology Center, Marlin: $11,725.00 for its 600-hour welding certificate, made up of $10,000.00 in tuition and $1,725.00 in program fees. Classes meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings for 12 months.
• Delaware County Community College, Media: $4,994 for its noncredit 225-hour welding certificate, which meets Fridays and Saturdays at the Marple Campus.

The Schuylkill and Delaware County programs both suit you if you work a weekday job.

Philadelphia and Pittsburgh: What Each City Costs

Your two biggest metros have very different price points.

Around Pittsburgh, you can pay as little as $4,842 at the Community College of Allegheny County if you live in Allegheny County. Its full-time certificate students can be ready for AWS certification in four months. Rosedale Technical College, also in Pittsburgh, costs more but has a much higher graduation rate. Around Philadelphia, Delaware County Community College charged $6,930 in-district and lets you take most welding courses in the evening on a part-time plan. Costs That Aren’t in the Tuition Line

Books and supplies at Pennsylvania schools ranged from $1,324 at Laurel Technical Institute to $2,950 at Penn Commercial in 2024–25. That’s on top of tuition.

Certification testing is handled differently from school to school:

• Included: Commonwealth Technical Institute covers your first AWS test attempt. The Institute of Medical Careers in Erie includes SMAW and FCAW exam fees in its program cost.
• Extra: Lancaster County Career and Technology Center prepares you for the D1.1 weld test but says the test is an out-of-pocket cost.
• On site: Westmoreland County Community College and Welder Training and Testing Institute in Allentown run AWS Accredited Test Facilities.

Out-of-state students face the biggest jump. Pennsylvania College of Technology charged $25,980 for out-of-state students, and Luzerne County Community College charged $16,260. To learn which tests you’ll need, read the welding certification guide.

Match the Price to Your Situation

You live in a community college’s home county and can take your time. Start with your local college. The Community College of Allegheny County, Northampton County Area Community College and Westmoreland County Community College in Youngwood all charged $6,018 or less in-district and offer an associate degree as well as shorter awards.

You want a full program at a low flat rate. Thaddeus Stevens charges every student the same $9,050 a year, and Commonwealth Technical Institute charged $7,714 for a 12-month diploma with a high graduation rate.

You want to finish fast and can pay more. Rosedale’s 8-month program or Philadelphia Technician Training’s 26-week program get you into the field quickly.

You’re thinking about pipeline work in western Pennsylvania. Laurel Business Institute in Uniontown ($13,713) and Laurel Technical Institute in Hermitage ($13,431) both run a 12-month welding and fabrication program with pipeline technology, which includes 500 hours of internship.

You want room to grow into engineering. Pennsylvania College of Technology costs more, but you can move from a welding certificate to an associate degree and then a bachelor’s degree at one school.

Is the Cost Worth It in Pennsylvania?

Pennsylvania welders earned a median of $52,900 in May 2025, or $25.43 an hour, according to the BLS. In the Philadelphia metro the median was $58,380, and in Pittsburgh it was $53,610.

A community college year costs a fraction of that. Even a $21,225 year at Johnson College is well under the state median salary. Where the math gets harder is when you pay private tuition and then take a long time to finish, so pick a schedule you can actually keep.
